Becoming an American citizen is a momentous achievement. It is a symbol of pride, identity, and belonging. The naturalization interview is the final step in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your knowledge of U.S. history, government, and civics, as well as your ability to speak, read, and write English.
This manual will provide you with everything you need to know about the naturalization interview. You will learn about the eligibility requirements, the application process, the interview format, and the types of questions you can expect to be asked. You will also find tips and strategies for preparing for the interview and increasing your chances of success.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for naturalization, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must have been a lawful permanent resident (LPR) for at least five years (or three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen).
- You must have resided continuously in the United States for at least five years (or three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen).
- You must be able to read, write, and speak English.
- You must have a basic understanding of U.S. history, government, and civics.
- You must be of good moral character.
The Application Process
To apply for naturalization, you must file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The form can be downloaded from the USCIS website or obtained from a USCIS office.
Once you have completed the form, you must mail it to the USCIS address listed on the form. You must also include a filing fee of $640.00.
After you have filed your application, USCIS will schedule you for an interview. The interview will be held at a USCIS office near your home.
The Interview Format
The naturalization interview typically lasts for about 30 minutes. The interview will be conducted by a USCIS officer who will ask you questions about your application and your knowledge of U.S. history, government, and civics.
The interview will be divided into two parts:
- The first part of the interview will focus on your personal information and your eligibility for naturalization.
- The second part of the interview will focus on your knowledge of U.S. history, government, and civics.
Types of Questions
The USCIS officer will ask you a variety of questions during the interview. Some of the most common questions include:
- What is your full name?
- What is your date of birth?
- What is your place of birth?
- What is your current address?
- How long have you lived in the United States?
- Are you married? If so, what is your spouse's name?
- Do you have any children? If so, what are their names and ages?
- What is your occupation?
- What is your income?
- Have you ever been arrested or convicted of a crime?
- Have you ever been a member of the Communist Party or any other totalitarian organization?
- Do you believe in the principles of the U.S. Constitution?
- What are the three branches of the U.S. government?
- Who is the current President of the United States?
- What are the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment?
The USCIS officer may also ask you to read a passage from the U.S. Constitution or to answer a civics question. For example, the officer may ask you to explain the Bill of Rights or to describe the process for amending the Constitution.
Tips for Preparing for the Interview
Here are some tips for preparing for the naturalization interview:
- Study the U.S. history, government, and civics materials that are available on the USCIS website.
- Practice answering the sample questions that are provided on the USCIS website.
- Take a citizenship preparation class.
- Speak to an immigration attorney if you have any questions about the naturalization process.
- Arrive at the interview on time and be prepared to answer questions about your application and your knowledge of U.S. history, government, and civics.
The naturalization interview is an important step in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. By following the tips and strategies outlined in this manual, you can increase your chances of success and take your place as a proud American citizen.
