About the Author

George William Curtis (1824-1892) was an American author, editor, and diplomat. He was a leading figure in the Republican Party and served as a member of the House of Representatives from New York from 1863 to 1873. Curtis was also a prominent advocate for civil rights and women's suffrage.

Curtis was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown University in 1842 and then studied law at Harvard Law School. After graduating from law school, Curtis moved to New York City and began his career as a writer. He wrote for several magazines and newspapers, including the New York Tribune and Harper's Weekly. In 1852, Curtis became the editor of Putnam's Monthly Magazine.

Curtis was a strong supporter of the Republican Party. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856 and 1860. In 1863, Curtis was elected to the House of Representatives. He served in the House for ten years and was a leading advocate for civil rights and women's suffrage.

In 1873, Curtis was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant as Minister to Great Britain. He served in this position until 1878. After returning to the United States, Curtis continued to write and lecture on political and social issues.

Curtis was a prolific writer. He published over 50 books and articles on a wide range of topics, including politics, literature, art, and travel. His most famous works include The Potiphar Papers (1853),Prue and I (1856),and Travels in Turkey and Back to England (1862).

Curtis was a gifted writer and speaker. He was known for his wit, humor, and eloquence. He was also a strong advocate for social justice. Curtis was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and a supporter of the women's suffrage movement.
