My English Daily - December 2024
Welcome to the December 2024 edition of My English Daily! In this issue, we'll be exploring a variety of topics related to the English language, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and culture.
Grammar
In this month's grammar section, we'll be taking a closer look at the present perfect tense. The present perfect tense is used to describe actions or events that began in the past and are still ongoing, or that have just been completed. It can also be used to talk about experiences that we have had in our lives.

To form the present perfect tense, we use the present tense of the verb "have" followed by the past participle of the main verb. For example:
- I have studied English for five years.
- She has just finished her homework.
- We have never been to London before.
The present perfect tense can be used with a variety of adverbs, including "already," "just," "never," "yet," and "for" + a period of time. For example:
- I have already finished my breakfast.
- She has just gotten out of bed.
- We have never been to the beach before.
- I have been studying English for five years.
Vocabulary
In this month's vocabulary section, we'll be learning some new words related to the topic of travel. Here are a few examples:
- Accommodation: a place to stay, such as a hotel, motel, or hostel
- Itinerary: a plan of your trip, including the places you will visit and the things you will do
- Passport: a document that allows you to travel to other countries
- Visa: a document that allows you to stay in a country for a period of time
- Luggage: your bags and suitcases
Here are some sentences using these new words:
- I booked my accommodation online.
- I'm still working on my itinerary.
- I need to get a passport before I can travel.
- I applied for a visa but I haven't received it yet.
- I'm going to pack my luggage tonight.
Pronunciation
In this month's pronunciation section, we'll be focusing on the pronunciation of the letter "r." The letter "r" can be pronounced in a variety of ways in English, depending on the word and the surrounding sounds. Here are a few examples:
- In the word "red," the "r" is pronounced with a rolled sound.
- In the word "car," the "r" is pronounced with a tapped sound.
- In the word "father," the "r" is pronounced with a retroflex sound.
It can be difficult to pronounce the letter "r" correctly in English, but with practice, you can improve your pronunciation. Here are a few tips:
- Start by practicing the rolled "r" sound. To do this, place the tip of your tongue behind your upper front teeth and blow air over it.
- Once you can pronounce the rolled "r" sound, practice the tapped "r" sound. To do this, place the tip of your tongue behind your upper front teeth and tap it once.
- Finally, practice the retroflex "r" sound. To do this, place the tip of your tongue behind the alveolar ridge (the ridge behind your upper front teeth) and curl it back.
Culture
In this month's culture section, we'll be taking a look at the history of the English language. The English language is a West Germanic language that originated in England, and is now spoken by over 1.5 billion people around the world. The English language has a long and complex history, and has been influenced by a variety of other languages, including Latin, French, and German.
The English language began to evolve from Proto-Germanic, the ancestor of all Germanic languages, around the 5th century AD. The Anglo-Saxons, a group of Germanic tribes, invaded England in the 5th and 6th centuries, and their language, Old English, became the dominant language of England.
Old English was a very different language from modern English. It had a much more complex grammar, and its vocabulary was much smaller. Over time, Old English began to change and evolve, and by the 11th century, it had become Middle English. Middle English was still a very different language from modern English, but it was much closer to the language we speak today.
The English language underwent a number of changes in the 15th and 16th centuries, due to the influence of the Renaissance and the Reformation. The English language was also influenced by the expansion of the British Empire, and by the 19th century, it had become a global language.
The English language continues to evolve today, and it is now spoken in a wide variety of dialects and accents around the world. The English language is a living language, and it is constantly changing and adapting to the needs of its speakers.
I hope you have enjoyed this issue of My English Daily. In this issue, we explored a variety of topics related to the English language, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and culture. I encourage you to continue learning about the English language, and to practice your English skills every day. The more you practice, the better your English will become.
