The humanities are in a state of crisis. They are increasingly marginalized in education and public discourse, and their relevance to the modern world is often questioned. This is a serious problem, because the humanities are essential to our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. They help us to develop critical thinking skills, to understand different perspectives, and to appreciate the beauty and complexity of human experience.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the decline of the humanities. One is the increasing emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. STEM subjects are seen as more practical and relevant to the job market, while the humanities are often seen as less valuable. This is a short-sighted view, however. The humanities are just as important to our success as a society as STEM subjects. They help us to understand the human condition, to solve complex problems, and to make informed decisions.

Another factor that has contributed to the decline of the humanities is the rise of digital technology. Digital technology has made it easier than ever to access information, but it has also made it more difficult to distinguish between credible and non-credible sources. This has led to a decline in critical thinking skills and an increase in misinformation. The humanities can help us to develop the critical thinking skills we need to navigate the digital age.

The decline of the humanities is a serious problem, but it is not irreversible. We can restore the voice of the humanities in our society by taking the following steps:

  • Increase funding for the humanities. Humanities programs are often underfunded, and this makes it difficult for them to attract and retain top faculty and students. Increasing funding for the humanities would send a clear message that we value these programs and believe they are essential to our future.
  • Integrate the humanities into STEM education. STEM education is important, but it is not enough. We need to integrate the humanities into STEM education so that students can develop the critical thinking skills and creativity they need to succeed in the 21st century workforce.
  • Promote the humanities in the public discourse. The humanities are often ignored in the public discourse, but they have a vital role to play in shaping our understanding of the world around us. We need to promote the humanities in the media, in schools, and in our communities.

The humanities are essential to our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. They help us to develop critical thinking skills, to understand different perspectives, and to appreciate the beauty and complexity of human experience. We must find ways to restore the voice of the humanities in our society.
